So me and my boyfriend(we’re both 17 and will turn 18 in June) of 2 years are moving in together this June I know it’s a while away but everyone says that it’ll be no time. First, the assumption is you are in the US. If that is not the case, please let us know where you are.
Nearly all rentals will require any adults living there to be named on the lease. So that’s not really an issue here.
However, the thing that popped out from your post is the idea of getting “credit” from this. Very, very few places report rent payments to the credit bureaus. It is basically a non-factor here. So either way you wouldn’t be building up your credit history by renting.
I suggest reading through the [Credit Building](https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/wiki/credit_building/) page in the wiki to start putting a plan together as to how you can build up your credit.
This can actually be a huge benefit to you. If it doesn’t work out, like there isn’t enough money to live comfortably or you find you need to move to another town, you can just leave and not get stuck with any payments or notices on your credit report. (rental companies don’t normally report good records but they sure do report bad ones)

Virtually all landlords and property management companies will require both of you to be on the lease if you’ll both be living there.
That said, having a lease in your name is just a contract between you and your landlord, and it doesn’t build your credit. Sometimes property management companies will offer credit reporting as an optional service, but I wouldn’t pay extra for that. You can build credit through the responsible use of a credit card and perhaps an auto loan or student loans at some point, without anything else on your credit report.
It’s not a terrible idea for you and your boyfriend to get an apartment he can afford on his own, without your financial contributions, so if the relationship ends you can move out and he can keep the apartment.
His mom can want whatever she wants, but she can’t make any demands of you unless she’s paying the rent. That said, I recommend this to you because I think it’ll make her happy and also not doing this would be a colossal mistake for your own sake:
Make a detailed plan of what would happen with the apartment and y’all’s living situations if you broke up. Who moves out? How do you handle the rent? Is one of you able to pay for it alone? If not, is it realistic to quickly find a roommate? Is the other person going to be able to find housing? Would the landlord allow you to find other tenants to take over the lease? If you can’t answer these questions, you honestly shouldn’t be living together yet.
This sounds like a good thing for you, since rent doesn’t affect credit anyway. Just make sure the apartment doesn’t require all adults to be on the lease (very, very likely). Otherwise, take her up on it
I don’t think any of the places I have lived actually report it to build ur credit only if u scree them over. So don’t count on that to build ur credit. Just get oneof those cards where u load money onto it but its from a credit card company then you should be able to get a normal credit card pretty soon after that.
