I just got an offer for a hybrid position where it’s 2 days in office and 3 days wfh. I currently live at home and pay almost no rent. The commute for this new job is 1 hour to 1.5 hours each way depending on traffic and the office is near a major city so traffic is always bad. Is it worth moving somewhere closer to work and pay like $1600-1800 a month for a 15-30 min commute on those 2 days?
Just stay where you are and deal with the commute. The hotel idea the other use posted is going to eat up a huge portion of your income. It’d effectively be giving yourself a massive pay cut. Be ready to quit or move if they try to force you into the office more though.
Is the 1600-1800 just rent? Or have you already factored in things like utilities, insurance, etc?
For me, I’d just do the drive twice a week.
90 mins on google maps or actually 90 mins in rush hour traffic? Rush hour can triple drive times.

Is this a first job? I only assume since it sounds like this would be your first time renting?
Take the time to save, and stay home if I’m sorta filling in the details correctly. I did 1.5- 2 hours daily for my first job on a train in and out of NYC. I understand people saying it is soul crushing, and I saw it in the older commuters faces who did it for years. But these days, especially hybrid, get that savings going, do the job while commuting for a period of time and it won’t kill you. You’ll be in a good place to then move out in a year or two.
I commute 1 hour 15 minutes each way, every day. Drive is not that bad and I like living in my small community. Pick a podcast or listen to the news. I want to move closer but apt prices are 2-3x what it costs in my small town to get something way smaller. Pick what means the most to you (low commute, nice housing, whatever) and focus on making that happen.
If it is only 2 days a week having to come to the office, I think you would be better off not having to spend the money on rent just for that. You are saving a LOT not having to pay for rent. If you leave a little early you can avoid some of the traffic those 2 days. It is just 2 days – I think it is worthwhile. If you still want to move later, you can still move later, but for right now, with only 2 days having to drive in to work, you will save a lot of money by not having to pay rent.
I think 2 days a week is manageable. It’s less than half your working days. (This is my commute, I’m going up from 1-2 days to 2-3 days a week next month.)
I drive 4-5 hours twice a week for work. I put in audio books to make the time go quickly. Sometimes podcasts. Find a way to enjoy the commute. I also upgraded my car so the driving is easier. I make enough to justify that upgrade.
Only two days in the office? That’s not much. Many people drive that much every day, twice a day. If you leave earlier, it might be less time.
That sounds like a pretty standard commute for a job in/near a major city. Before Covid mine was 1.5 hours in and 2 hours home – 5 days a week. Thankfully I can only do 1-2 days a week now. If the job is better and the pay is great, take it and deal with the commute while saving up money or paying off debts. Find a good podcast and you will quickly get used to the drive!
That’s the equivalent of a half hour commute 5 days per week – which is a pretty average commute. I’d absolutely prefer the long commute twice a week over the half hour commute
There may be other lifestyle factors that push you to move out…but the commute probably isn’t going to be the primary one.
To throw it into other terms…you’ll be getting paid something like $100/hour for that commute. That’s (financially) worth it imho.
30 minutes each way 5 days a week is the middle of your 4-6 hours in 2 days.

I am of the opinion that those types of commutes are not sustainable. Luckily, you don’t need to deal with it forever as, eventually, you’ll move out.
Massive trade off here is time+vehicle costs.
Do the job, but maybe don’t plan on this scheme staying the same forever.
I did a very similar routine and found it exhausting after a while.
Personally I’d say no. Find a hotel room for those 2 days per week, maybe book it an entire month at a time (2 days each week for the month) or an airbnb (same deal).
I have a commute of just over an hour one way that I do two days a week. I work from home 3 day a week. It flies by after you have done it a few times. Save your money.

For me, the trade off for more home, quieter city, and really good schools for kids is worth it.

4hr/wk x 4wks/mo = 16hrs/mo
$1600/16hrs = $100/hr
Would you pay yourself $100 each time you make that commute?
That commute doesn’t seem so bad. I’ve done more than that everyday before. If your commuting 8 days a month then you’ll be paying an extra $225 in rent for every time you have to commute. That’s a sizeable chunk. Thats save for a house type money
