My grandmother recently gave me an envelope of stock certificates circa 1960s. I don’t recognize the companies and most don’t show up on a Google search. It’s hard to say if the companies went bankrupt or merged with others. What’s the best way to check if these have value?
You might try Yahoo Finance.
Your public library may be able to point you at resources, as well.
It may take some research. Do the certificates have CUSP numbers on them?

Oh man. Stock from the 60s. There are stock research firms that can help with this, though they cost money.
Historical news paper searches can be helpful. NY Times has digitized their library going back to the 1800s. https://www.nytimes.com/search/ – you may find announcements of companies going through bankruptcy, acquisition, or renames. Search the CUSIP — those came out in the early 60s — uniquely identifying companies in the US.
Search eBay, too. You may get more info about the companies from prior sellers, as old stock certificates are sometimes worth money (like some early film production companies, long since gone, are worth $$$).
