Got laid off, not my fault they simply “eliminated my position”.
No severance. Nada. Just my paid vacation days I had earned (4x days).
I wrote asking for 2x weeks severance pay, they countered with 1x and week and asked I sign a severance contract. They have not shown me the contract yet.
Should I keep pushing for 2 weeks? Any tips appreciated.
A general tip on negotiating is to fully exploit all of the leverage you have…in your case, none.
Do you have anything to negotiate? Most don’t, and you take any severance they give you
Usually severance is given for a couple reasons:
* The company believe its the right thing to do to help assist their former employee in transitioning.
* Prevent the employee to take advantage certain things, but basically make any claims against the employer. Reduction of liability by making you sign a severance contract.
Looks like the first point is not a thing with your employer.
For the second point, is there anything about you that can be leveraged? My guess is your employer is not too worried you presenting any significant liability since they didn’t immediately offer any severance.
It sounds like you have no leverage. I would take whatever they are willing to give you, but make sure you read the severance contract and understand what you will be forfeiting.
Could you say something like “I’ll work for 2 weeks, pay me for 1.5”? Assuming you have some domain knowledge of the business they could probably find something of use for you to do at a discount?
I’ve never gone through something like that so I’m not sure how it works.
Everybody has leverage, if you are in a business where you can reach out to their customers and badmouth them I would threaten them with slandering them in the marketplace. ( I would use different wording)
You owe these people nothing squeeze them?
Good way of describing, and nice paragraph to obtain facts concerning
my presentation subject, which i am going to present in college.
