Hello. I live in NJ, and really struggling making ends meet. I currently earn $13 an hour and do about 35-40 hours a week. I take home about $650-700 every two weeks after taxes. I share a two bedroom apartment, and my rent has been around $870 a month with utilities. I can barely afford food. I’ve only been eating once a day lately, and it’s not fun. Saving for a down payment on anything is virtually impossible right now. Getting a second job is difficult because my schedule at my first job constantly changes. I’m thinking about going back to school or college, but that’s not cheap either. After I pay rent, I pretty much have nothing left over for myself.
33 years ago I was right where you are. I joined the United States Air Force. Best thing that I vould have done. 22 years USAF. 9 years civilian contractor, retired at 52 1/2.
The military may be right for you.
There are always only two ways to fix budget problems: make more money and/or spend less.
Making more money is fairly obvious. If your current job isn’t giving you a consistent 40 hours a week and is preventing you from getting a second job, you need to find a new first job. Get something that pays more, is full time, offers overtime, and/or will accommodate a second job. You’re in a hole and the easiest way to climb out is to find a way to get more money coming in.
On the other side of the equation, NJ is expensive, so attempts to spend less may not make much of a dent. After rent you only have ~$600 a month left for everything else. Have you looked into moving into a place with more roommates to lower your rent? Splitting a larger place with 3-4 roommates may work out cheaper than splitting an apartment with 1 roommate.
I assume you would’ve mentioned it, but do you have family you could move in with for free or cheap?
Is there anything tying you to NJ? Have you considered picking up and moving to a less expensive area of the country?
If you have some idea of what your interests are, getting a college education or technical school/trade school education would be the best way to see a big increase in your monthly income. You should be able to qualify for scholarships and financial aid that would cover a big portion of the financial responsibility.
