New homeowner here.
Recently contracted a professional to repair some significant damage that needed immediate attention. Can property taxes still be protested based on this damage or is it not justifiable anymore? There is about a 2 month gap between the repairs and the county appraisal notice.
Gonna be a lot of state and county specifics here.
Moreover, appraisal =/= assessment. Assessed value is based on a number of things, most of which are just comparable homes near yours.
Best bet is to call your county assessor for the details.
It’s not taxes you protest. It’s the appraised value.
Most assessors have a 20% swing allowed in value. Unless the repairs were that significant to raise the value of your house 15% or more, it’s not worth it
Calling the assessor to tell them the condition of your property has improved since they last assessed it…
That sounds like what I WOULD NOT do to reduce my property taxes.

Property taxes are very much location-dependent. Every state and county has its own rules.
Probably depends on the damage. Some things don’t really affect assessed value, some have a huge impact. Repairs are usually not so much “improvements” as “maintenance” (unless this was “omg… I’ve got a leaky roof, might as well add another floor while they’re fixing it” or something)
