I recently graduated college with a bachelors in accounting. I worked as an accounting intern for my last year of school and I made $21 per hour. This position ended when I graduated in December.
I have an interview for an accounting specialist position. Their range is $17-$25 per hour. This seems to be within the range for my state.
I am hoping to be close to $50k annually, but that puts me at the top of their range. The position requires 1-3 years experience and a 2 year degree. I only have 1 year experience but I have a 4 year degree, and that’s really my only leverage besides the fact I was making $21 an hour in a similar position without my degree. Is that even relevant?
It’s relevant to tell you where the market is in your area for an intern. Personally I would expect a full time person with a degree to be paid above an intern. Personally I would try to negotiate on your experience, great reviews from your internship, and education first. Hopefully you also have other offers and can make a choice with that in mind too. It’s getting close to tax time, lots of places should be hiring.
Anything preventing you from moving to a bigger city or different state? Is the company that you interned with not hiring? I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere near the top of the range. Best case scenario they offer you 20$. It’s been my experience that when a range is listed they are going to try to keep you as close to the bottom of it to start as possible.
Prior pay rate is certainly relevant to you. It may not be directly relevant to your employer. But it is something a good employer would consider if they want to entice you go come work for them.

Thanks for your post on this site. From my experience, there are times when softening way up a photograph may possibly provide the photography with a little an creative flare. Sometimes however, this soft clouds isn’t just what you had as the primary goal and can sometimes spoil a normally good photograph, especially if you anticipate enlarging the item.
